Attack & midfield shafts: how to pick your weight

Attack and midfield shafts are 30". The decisions left are material and weight — and both come down to a trade-off between hand speed and how the shaft behaves when it takes a hit.

Lighter is faster. Heavier lasts longer.

  • Darkhorse-145 (145g, carbon) — the lightest shaft we make. Best for attackmen and offensive middies who live on quick stick work and want the ball out of their stick fast. Raised checkered grip with a soft tack finish.
  • Darkhorse-175 (175g, carbon) — the balanced pick, and the one most players should start with. Enough weight to feel solid on checks, light enough to dodge with. Ideal for two-way middies.
  • Sc-Ti 7X (185g, scandium-titanium alloy) — for players who want metal. Dents or bends instead of snapping, so a damaged shaft usually finishes the game. $79.99, in Bead Blast and 3D Raised Checkered finishes.
  • Darkhorse-210 (210g, carbon) — built for players who break shafts. Thicker walls and more material in the impact zone. Also the right choice if you play short stick D or box.

Carbon or metal?

Carbon composite is lighter than alloy at the same strength and adds flex that puts extra snap on your shot. It also won't dent or bend the way a 6000 or 7000 series alloy shaft will. Where metal has the edge is failure mode — metal bends, carbon breaks. Our Sc-Ti 7X exists for players who'd rather have a shaft that dents, and our heavier carbon models exist to close the gap for everyone else.

Are they legal for high school and college?

Yes. All Primo shafts are NFHS and NCAA legal.
