The thing nobody expects

Our metal 60″ pole is lighter than our carbon one. The Sc-Ti 7X is 385g. The carbon Darkhorse-425 is 425g. It's also $55 cheaper.

"Metal is heavier" is the received wisdom in this sport. On our shelf it's false — that's what the scandium is for.

What scandium-titanium actually is

7-series aluminium (zinc-magnesium-copper), micro-alloyed with scandium and titanium. The scandium refines the grain structure, which is how you take strength up without taking weight up.

Worth being straight about, since the industry isn't: every "titanium" shaft in lacrosse is a micro-alloy. The titanium and scandium are measured in fractions of a percent, not double digits — ours and everyone else's. That's not a criticism, it's how the metallurgy works. We publish what's in ours; most brands publish nothing.

Metal or carbon?

The difference isn't strength. Both are strong. The difference is the failure mode.

  • Carbon composite fails completely. It holds, holds, holds — then snaps. Usually mid-check, usually with no warning.
  • Scandium-titanium fails gradually. It dents. It bends. A dented shaft is still a shaft.

If you've snapped a shaft, buy metal. If you've never broken one and you want maximum stiffness and the best grip texture, buy carbon. We make both and we'd rather you bought the right one.
